Employment Awareness Training

Employment is Possible for EVERYONE! This is an outstanding FREE training for Kansas families, youth/young adults with disabilities, community members, and professionals who serve individuals with disabilities in Kansas. So many times the employment expectations for youth/young adults with disabilities are low or none at all. Families, youth/young adults with disabilities and professionals are invited to join us at the June 2 and 17th Family Employment Awareness Training, FEAT.

The Family Employment Awareness Training is designed to increase the expectations and awareness of families and individuals with disabilities/special health care needs regarding the possibilities for the youth/young adult who has a disability to obtain meaningful and satisfying work in their community. Family Employment Awareness Training (FEAT) is a family-focused, knowledge-based intervention to support families and their members with disabilities to increase their expectations for competitive employment and knowledge of the resource to support it. FEAT is a two-part training which includes a combination of lecture, small-group activities, rotating small groups and youth pull-out sessions and activities. Part one of FEAT focuses on the importance of the parents’ and young adults’ roles in the transition to employment process to ensure the young adult’s postsecondary goals reflect their vision for life after high school. Part one also emphasizes the importance of increasing expectations for employment by sharing examples of individuals who are successfully competitively employed in their communities and brings employees, employers and entrepreneurs from the local community to share their stories about employment with FEAT participants. Part two of FEAT shares what resources are available at the local, state and federal levels and brings representatives of those resources together with families to answer questions, share contact information and examples of services they provide to families in similar situations.
